Your Ref: Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Std.22/KW. May 10th, 1935. Messrs. Rolls Royce, Ltd., DERBY. Dear Sirs, Re:- Thermostat - E.86612. We beg to thank you for your letter of the 8th inst. and enclosed Drawing E.86612 Thermostat. We can of course make any type of thermostat and shall be pleased to let you have a sample. There are many things to consider when designing a thermostat to do a specific job, and in order to avoid waste of time and effort we put these forward for your consideration. We note that the thermostat should commence to open at 75 degrees centigrade and be fully open at 82 degrees, the total expansion required being .250" from the adjusted position. Since the boiling point of the filling liquid is fixed by the opening point of the thermostat, it may be a little difficult to secure a range of 7 degrees with the expansion required unless an external means of loading the thermostat is adopted. Thermostats of this type are completely exhausted so that there are no effects due to included air, consequently the external atmospheric pressure when at a temperature of say 12 centigrade will collapse the bellows end plates so far as the end of the internal guide sleeve will allow. We presume, however, that it is your intention to adjust the thermostat to a length of 1.275" by means of the valve stem, this will result in a pull on the valve at 12 degrees centigrade, amounting to about 18 lbs. TO AVOID DELAY ALL ENVELOPES SHOULD BE ADDRESSED TO THE FIRM | ||
