Plugs.(continued)

When taken out, they were dry, but there was a fair amount of carbon deposit on the points.
These have been cleaned and refitted.

Periods.

The periods on acceleration we consider normal up to 60 M.P.H. after which the engine becomes rough and at 70 M.P.H. it is very rough, at this speed the valves are bouncing. Retard vibrations from 70 M.P.H. to 20 M.P.H. are pronounced but we do not consider them to be abnormal.

Engine gears.

There was a slight engine gear sing when test was started. We are of opinion that this has increased slightly, also a slight rattle has developed.

Engine case.

New oil sump and cover fitted U.63793/4 to L.O.P.S.2198; otherwise to L.O.P.S.2198. There is a bad oil leak from rear of engine case coming from rear bearing, we also had a bad oil leak from magneto brake cover, this was found to be due to no paper joint fitted.

Water pump & drive.

We have had no trouble with water pump. Condition of pump is good. The fabric drive has deteriorated due to the oil acting on the rubber. There is a slight oil leak from water pump drive housing.

Controls.

Controls generally are in good conditions. Slackness to the amount of 1 notch on quadrant had developed in carburettor mixture controls. There also considerable slack in bearing of accelerator countershaft where bearing is supported by carburetter control bracket. Bracket fastened on rear cylinder for ignition control had become very loose, the nuts being nearly off. This has been made O.K. There is loss in control to magneto due to too much end play in the universal joint in controls.

Inlet pipe.

This is quite O.K.

Exhaust manifold pipe & fittings.

The exhaust manifold is in good condition. We have had a center joint blow out on front joint. Is found that the spring washer had been left on one of the center studs and was firmly embedded in the copper asbestos washer. We have had no further washer blow out since refitted. The nut holding pipe to manifold has continually worked loose. We were of opinion that this should have a locking device, we fitted one over here. The working loose of the nut has caused the fracture of the flange on exhaust pipe.
