Oy4-E-112824 November 28, 1924. To: Mr. Belnap cc Mr. Claude Johnson Mr. F.{Mr Friese} H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} Royce Works Committee London File Mr. Nadin From: Mr. Olley Re Proposal Sheet No.43 Transmission Lubrication (New Section No.6180) The proposal is shown fully on arrangement prints A-6198/8/9 herewith. Print A-8378 shows the oil syringe modified for use with this scheme. Prints A-2085 and A-2115 show the new rear axle box cover and filler plug, which (with regular monthly attention) prevent overfilling the axle through the torque tube. This change was incorporated in England's X-3457. The scheme has been in use 10,000 miles on 102 GX without trouble. The connection to the trunnion however was only recently made, and on 102 GX alemite nipples were used under the bonnet for filling. On consideration of the use of alemite nipples we came to the conclusion that we must avoid them for use on any running mechanism as delicate as ball bearings etc. The reason is that wherever an alemite nipple appears it will receive "attention" whenever the car is turned in to an alemite lubricating station for "general oiling". The existence of these stations coupled with the fact that a chauffeur is seldom allowed time for lubricating his own car, is the main reason for fitting alemites, and at the same time the reason why they cannot be used on delicate mechanism. The stations are capable of keeping spring shackles etc. properly lubricated, but the quality of lubricant they use varies with almost every station, the quantity of lubricant is left to the discretion of the operator, and a certain amount of dirt is bound to be introduced with the alemite hose. Cup grease is often used in the alemite compressors, which rapidly dries off and leaves a hard varnish-like residue. We have therefore threaded the end of the oil syringe 1/2" 16 THD. Rolls-Royce standard, and tapped the holes in the oiler the same. | ||
