The change speed lever shaft which failed on 7-EX was instructed on the LeC. to be a solid piece made from tube with each end swaged down. This is the scheme which is instructed for the standard parts being produced. When producing the first experimental parts, we could not obtain the tube swaged at each end for our small quantities and the Expl: Dept: asked the D.O. for an alternative scheme. We received a scheme for the loose end which was to be pegged and brazed. Several sets were made like that and ran satisfactorily. Later the material was changed and the shaft was made in CHNS. and hardened - the brazing was then left off because of it affecting the hardness of the shaft. This was an error - with the change in material, we ought to have pointed out the trouble with the brazing. It was a mistake for which the Expl: Dept: are responsible.
