To E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} from Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} 4306 Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/KW.28.9.36. Phantom III. The attached note from Martindale is probably a pessimistic view of the state of the Ph.III brakes. Actually I must admit that if they are adjusted up their vices are not very apparent; in fact as I said after my trip to Spain, they behaved as well as any I had tried. There is little doubt, however, that the complaint of our tester who was delivering the Ph.III to His Grace the Duke of Sutherland was due to the front brakes coming on their stop. It also seems to be true that one can very easily make the Ph.III brakes smoke, and smoking brakes ultimately mean squeaking brakes. I think the only solution is to decide to get the extra cost of the lighter alloy drums out of the system somewhere, as we hope will be possible on the Bentley.
