X.3614. Re. American Visit

(5) FAILURE OF ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. X.3878. X.2515. X.4162. X.3014b. X.1925.

Dynamos have given trouble the chief fault being the terminals coming loose owing to their method of fixing to the insulated block, which has caused faulty connection, a failure which we have also experienced ourselves, and which was cured on later dynamos by an improved fixing of the terminal.

We have circulated our various Depots for this feature to be inspected and for the improvement to be fixed to the terminals when opportunity offers, to prevent this failure taking place.

America also complain seriously that in the case of dynamo failure it is very inaccessible, and the changing of the dynamo is a very long and tedious job.

Fuses blowing are a source of trouble owing, I feel sure, to the incorrect size of fuse wire being used, and also to this being incorrectly fixed.

(6) WIRING. X.2778.

This they report is giving trouble by the wires earthing where they pass under the bottom clip of the dashboard on the steering column side. They report having cases where the wire has earthed or the clips broken.

We have ourselves experienced the trouble of the wires being cut where they pass over the edge of the frame at this quarter.

Could not some better protection for the wires be arranged at this point? This could probably be embodied on the present scheme.

(7) LUGGAGE CARRIERS. X.35071

The fixing of luggage carriers is universally carried out at Coachbuilders, and the fixing is very unsatisfactory. Although the proposed luggage carrier may not yet have been standardised, I think that some designs for fixing of the brackets should be submitted to America in order that they can obtain something better than is being done at present.
