EAC. OILING.

We have measured the temperature of the cylinder barrels which project into the crankcase on the EAC. engine, by means of a thermo couple.

We find that the temperature of the skirts reaches 127°C. If we assume that the top portion of the barrel is the temperature of the water (80°C), this would allow the bottom of the cylinder to expand .00212".

We are testing cylinders in which the bores have been ground .002" taper. The investigations in the oiling problem show that if we get a taper wedge oil film, the oil will be difficult to keep down.

EAC. CYLINDER EXPANSION.

Temp. of skirts. 127°C.
Temp. of bores. 80°C.

Coefficient of
expansion C.I. .1061 X 10^-4 = .00001061.

Cylinder diameter. 4.25

Expansion of skirt. 4.25 X .0000106 X 127.
Expansion of bore. 4.25 X .0000106 X 80.

Difference in expansion.

= 4.25 X .0000106 (127 - 80)
= 4.25 X .0000106 X 47.
= .00212 approx.
