INTER-OFFICE MEMO.
1091.

Date June 19th 1936.
From Major Thomas.
To Mr. S.B.Wilks.
Subject Letter from Mr.Robothom.

1. The Rings used, have been Standard Rings in all cases, and I understand from Mr. Newsome that they are Ground Finish.

2. Oil Control - The tests we have up to date, go to show that Piston and Ring wear in C.P. Blocks is very small, consequently the Oil Consumption should be maintained over a very long period. This seems to be realised in practice.

On the Avon Car, the Consumption at 30,000 miles, was approximately 1,300 miles to the gallon, according to their figures, notwithstanding acknowledged leak from Crankcase Joint, and fast driving.

On examination of this engine, both Piston and Ring wear were negligible, the only trouble being Carbon Deposit, lodging in the Scraper Ring Slots.

I have no other mileage comparable to this, and the next best is Mr. Grice's car, which including the 200 Hour Bench Test, has done the equivalent of 25,000 miles, approximately. He reports excellent Oil Consumption.

3. Apparently, yes, to some extent, as we have had about two cases reported for high Oil Consumption on Road Test. These have been six Cylinders in both cases.

4. I do not see that the cost need be unreasonable, considering the benefits obtained, providing that the Plant is properly laid out for the job. I attach some notes on the cost, so far as we are able to give it.
