46557 Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} C. Wd.{Mr Wood/Mr Whitehead} C. Roy.{Sir Henry Royce} C. Eft. BY/C4/H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} 2. 1. 24. 20. HP. CHASSIS. DOVER STEERING WHEELS. Customers are returning the Dover type Steering Wheels to us because the covering cracks where the arms joint up to the rims. The Dover people have taken one of these wheels, namely, one which was returned by the owner of Chassis 45-G-6, and claim that they have effectively filled in the cracks and they say they are confident that the cracks will not show up again, owing to the fact that the Exonite covering will by this time have reached its limit of contraction, therefore the renovation should be a permanent one. A number of wheels have been returned to them on which they propose to carry out the same method of renovating, but before we can agree to using wheels again we are sending you herewith the renovated steering wheel taken from chassis 45-G-6, and should be glad if you would have same fitted to a chassis so that we can get some experience with same, and find out whether the cracks re-open. In regard to the other steering wheels which have been returned to the Dover people, will Wd.{Mr Wood/Mr Whitehead} please inform them that we are making the above tests with the wheel they have renovated, as we cannot agree to using these wheels as new ones until we are satisfied that we shall have no further trouble with them. If they wish to renovate the wheels that have been returned to them, they may do so, but instructions must be given that the Works should hold these in stock until we know the result of the test with the above wheel BY/C.
