1934 BUICK SERIES 40 S.U.P. SPECIFICATIONS Page 5 DETAILED SPECIFICATIONS ENGINE ENGINE - Straight eight, overhead valve design, unit power plant type, five-point suspension, two supports at the front (at each end of timing gear cover), two at the flywheel housing and one at the rear of transmission. All supports mounted in soft rubber, insulating the frame from engine vibration. Pressed steel oil pan. CYLINDERS - Cast in block, integral with crankcase (G.M.C. #13 cast iron). Cylinder block reinforced between cylinders to reduce distortion. The crank-case is reinforced with three webs. The crankcase extends below centerline of crankshaft 2-3/8" (60.32 m/m). CRANKSHAFT - Five bearing drop forged carbon steel. Shaft is statically and dynamically balanced and fitted with eight counterweights. A ring type torsional balancer built into fan-drive pulley. Steel-backed babbitt-lined bearings are used. Solid shims are provided for adjustment. Thrust is taken on center, or number 3, main bearing. BEARINGS DIAMETER (CRANKSHAFT JOURNALS) LENGTH (BEARINGS) Front 2-5/16" (58.74 m/m.{Mr Moon / Mr Moore}) 1-1/4" (31.75 m/m.{Mr Moon / Mr Moore}) Front Center 2-3/8" (60.33 m/m.{Mr Moon / Mr Moore}) 15/16" (23.81 m/m.{Mr Moon / Mr Moore}) Center (Thrust) 2-7/16" (61.91 m/m.{Mr Moon / Mr Moore}) 1-5/8" (41.27 m/m.{Mr Moon / Mr Moore}) Rear Center 2-1/2" (63.50 m/m.{Mr Moon / Mr Moore}) 15/16" (23.81 m/m.{Mr Moon / Mr Moore}) Rear 2-9/16" (65.09 m/m.{Mr Moon / Mr Moore}) 2-1/16" (52.38 m/m.{Mr Moon / Mr Moore}) PISTONS - Tin plated Cast Iron, full skirt type. Four rings--three above the piston and one below. The two upper rings are of the compression type 1/8" (3.17 m/m) wide, the other two rings are of the oil seal straight cut, one piece type 5/32" (3.96 m/m) wide, seated in groove with ten 1/8" (3.17 m/m) holes drilled for oil return. PISTON PINS - Hollow with tapered hole, maximum thickness at center being the point of greatest stress. Diameter 13/16" (20.63 m/m), length 2-11/16" (68.22 m/m). Clamp bolt in connecting rod locks pin in place. Pins are offset toward camshaft to eliminate piston clatter 3/64" (1.19 m/m) Pins bear in bronze bushings in pistons. CONNECTING RODS - Drop forged carbon steel, "I" beam section. Lower bearings babbitt bonded directly to rod and cap. Solid shim adjustment for wear. Cap and rod are split on a 45° angle instead of horizontally, to provide clearance for removal through cylinder. DIAMETER LENGTH Rod Center to Center 7-1/4" ( .184 m.{Mr Moon / Mr Moore} ) Lower Bearing 2" (50.8 m/m.{Mr Moon / Mr Moore}) 1-1/4" (31.75 m/m.{Mr Moon / Mr Moore}) Issued:-May 10, 1934. | ||
