With reference to the question of the ball bearings in the Dynamo, I am certainly of the opinion that tight ball bearings, that is, ball bearings which are fitted up with a slight definite clearance between the balls and the races, are liable to increase noise effects. I have actually instructed that we shall ask for a special assembly of the ball bearings for Dynamo use which will assure us of a positive clearance being arranged in each case. I am inclined to think the reason why the bearing is sensitive is that a tighter fitting bearing will transmit the vibrations more readily from the armature of the case than a slacker one, and therefore induce humming effects.
