LUGGAGE AND WHEEL ACCOMMODATION AT REAR.

We send herewith N.sch.2747 which shews the proposed schemes for dealing with the rear end of SS.{S. Smith} mentioned in R7/M20.10.28. (a print to Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} and the original to BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} for issuing.)

The description on the drg. makes the proposals fairly clear. It will be realised that there would be two wheel carriers which would have many pieces in common, and a luggage grid. Likewise, customers only having one spare wheel could be catered for with ease.

The proposal is that there shall never be any side wheel carriers. That means that the max. body cannot reasonably have a trunk. There is an outlet open to us in the case of a customer insisting on a trunk, in that we can supply him with side carriers under protest, and then mount a trunk at the back, leaving the wheel carrier in position at the rear so that the wheels can be put there when the trunk is off. It must be understood that, up to the present, 'R' has distinctly dis-approved of this proposal.

We propose to treat India 3. in the same way.
