No. The increased clearance cage is not a standard product. We think that by the end of the war Hoffmann's will be sufficiently convinced of the value of either increased cage bore clearance or increased ball pocket clearance to standardise one or the other of these features on angular contact and deep groove bearings. Two cases of serious cage wear have occurred on semi floating axle wheel bearings as follows:- 1 On 14 BII after numerous circuits of Brooklands. This bearing is in my museum and is a definite case of ball and cage interference. 2 A failure on a very early semi floater which I did not see or investigate but appears to have been the same trouble See page 2. | ||
