EIO/HP15.7.38. I have looked up the regulations which lay it down that cars, except those travelling with an international certificate for motor vehicles, must conform as regards lighting to the pattern approved by the authorities. That definitely exempts English cars on triptyque from conforming to these regulations. I find, however, that our drivers when in France with cars which do not conform to the French regulations are frequently stopped by the police, and, where it is possible, made to change over their tail lamps and dim their side lamps. It would seem, therefore, that we ought to make some provision for a tail lamp on the nearside when in France. There would be no objection, I think, to any form of supplementary tail lamp operated in conjunction with the existing tail lamp because the tail lamp also has a stop lamp in it controlled by the operation of the foot brake pedal. We have sometimes used a small tail lamp with an extension lead to be coupled up as and when required only. Could this be done in the case of the Bentley without cutting out the standard tail light and stop light ? If so, that would seem to be an easy way out of the difficulty. Cx.{Major Len W.
