Scheme to fix squeaking brakes on 20 HP cars by fitting dampers to the brake drums.

SQUEAKING BRAKES. 14257 We have frequent complaints of squeaking brakes on 20 HP. cars. It is very difficult to permanently overcome these complaints. We attach herewith an arrangement of a scheme which we have running on three experimental 20 HP. cars. We have not been able to make any of the brakes squeak since fitting these dampers, but if we remove the dampers from the brake drums, the brakes squeak badly. These dampers are intended to be fitted on to existing cars. They will accommodate themselves to the variation in brake drum diameters. We have tested whether the fitting of these dampers affects the cooling of the brake drum. Our tests shew that the drums are cooler with the aluminium dampers fitted than without them. We have not found that the heat has affected the temper of the springs. We have also tried various other types of damper of lighter construction. The above scheme is the most effective. We recommend we fit these dampers in cases where we have repeated complaints of squeaks. We suggest also that we ought to get out a permanent scheme for production cars; we might test with the aluminium cast on the drum. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} | ||
