Gearbox - Phantom III.

We send herewith N.Sch.4736 which deals with the complaint that the spring ring on the 2nd speed sliding shaft is too stiff to pass over the shaft end into the groove.

We show the shaft end reduced in fig.1, all other features being unaltered. This modification should be applied to existing shafts. It has already been tried by the Experimental Department and found satisfactory.

Fig.2. shows the permanent scheme.

We are not in agreement with leaving off the ring (as has been done on the experimental boxes) as we cannot be sure that the ball bearing will not work to the rear end when running in top gear, in which case it is useless to the 2nd speed when next required. While the bearings are a tight fit we do not think they will move but any that are slack or wear slack may move.

N.Sch.4736 herewith.
