X.2512 - CONDENSERS.

We saw Mr. Goodman yesterday and went into the question of our condenser tests. We first of all demonstrated to him to his satisfaction that we did not raise the test voltage to a greater figure than 400 R.M.S. Then we took a number of the condensers recently received and just taken out from the Stores, unpacked these and put them on one by one, under which circumstances several condensers, about 20% or perhaps more, broke down. Mr. Goodman was quite satisfied of the fact that these were breaking down on our tests within this voltage.

We pointed out to Mr. Goodman the careful steps we had taken, in view of remarks made earlier on by Mr. Turner of the G.E. Company, not to switch on the voltage at the full value, but to arrange for it to be switched on at a lower figure and then gradually raised to the test voltage. It will be remembered that we used to put condensers on at the full voltage and even to flash these on that voltage when on test. This was the feature that Mr. Turner particularly objected to and to which we agreed at the time that he had some cause for objection. It was on this account that we altered our tests with a view to overcoming this.
