Contd. -2- EFC1/T15.2.21. Mr. Goodman stated yesterday that he did not object to this feature of flashing on the voltage and he as good as said that Mr. Turner's objection could not carry any weight. We, however, now agree in view of further experience that Mr. Turner's contention is correct. Flashing a condenser on a voltage of the same order of magnitude as the maximum voltage kick likely to be experienced in service, is too serious a test, as the abnormal voltage due to oscillations will be much greater than the normal, and any condenser might be broken down under such circumstances as Mr. Turner himself fairly well demonstrated. Mr. Goodman, however, finally came to the conclusion that the tests that they were imposing at their works of flashing on at 550 volts ( only for short periods be it noted) was in one sense too stringent, in that he considered such a test caused weaknesses in the condensers which allowed -- on a small voltage applied for a longer time (as we do) to break these down. He stated, therefore, that on his return he would have their tests modified to be more nearly in accordance with our own test, except that he would use 450 volts instead of 400. We suggest that a copy of our latest specification of test should be sent to the Dubilier Company so that they could satisfy themselves that the condensers are right according to our tests before they send them to us. With this end in view we attach to Wd{Mr Wood/Mr Whitehead}'s copy, two copies of the specification in question. EFC. | ||
