X5840. To Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} From G.W.H. Hotel de France, Chateauroux, FRANCE. 7/12/31. 18.G.IV. We have received your telegram today - ARRANGE TO SEND CAR TO PN{Mr Northey} AT PARIS HAMPER WILL NOT BE READY. HIVES. We have carried out the following modifications to the car. Stronger driving springs fitted to the slipper wheel. Spring plates taken out of the rear engine feet making the diamond mounting as it was in the first instance, with the fitting of the rubber blocks which we found gave the best results. Torque reaction dampers taken out and examined, fabric washers slightly soaked in oil and refitted with a fabric load of 3 lbs. The new exhaust manifold has been fitted, the joint to the demtake pipe had distorted, this was made O.K. The two new pads fitted to the radiator. The lever fitted to the compensating shaft to give increased front braking. The brake drums have been dismantled and brakes examined. The front brakes were found swamped in oil due to the increased supply to the pivots which drains down the outside of the brake anchorage plate and is carried in to the drum by the wind and by the brake drum revolving. Rear shock dampers taken off and checked. Found inside lever loose on shock damper arm shaft of the N.S.R., causing lost movement of approx. 5/4" on the damper lever. The N.S.F. damper which was thudding was found to be due to an air lock. This air took some time to get rid of. We have just completed these modifications and the car will resume running in the morning, and will be delivered to PN.{Mr Northey} at the Paris Showrooms, Avenue George V.{VIENNA}, on Thursday morning. We have received today the invoice for the Watford Speedometer that is being sent out by West. We are afraid that this will not arrive in time to be fitted to the car or for us to receive it. We shall therefore have to make arrangements for it to be sent back after we have left. G.W.H. G.W.Hancock | ||
