X7320 BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} } FROM HDY.{William Hardy} HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} } HDY{William Hardy}1/M28.3.33. C. to SG.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} WOR.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} MODIFICATIONS TO CHANGE GEAR LEVER. X.7320. X.5320. At the request of the Expl. Dept. we have made various modifications to the reverse stop on the change gear lever to prevent rattles, as shewn on N. sch. 3672. herewith. We shew a reverse stop release obtained by depressing the whole knob on the change lever, but this sch. is not favoured by R.{Sir Henry Royce} as it is thought to be insufficiently proof against accidental depression with consequent baulking of a change into 2nd. Instead it is suggested that all that is needed is a button of larger size held up by a weak low rating spring, and a slight reduction of the travel of the button. We also suggest that the buttons for both the change lever and the hand brake lever should be the same and should be covered with black celluloid as is done for the horn switch on the steering column. With regard to the trigger the Expl. Dept. have found that very small clearances will prevent noise from this, and we give a suggestion for finer limits which considerably reduce the maximum clearances. We are inclined to think however that if very fine fits are necessary it would be better to provide a small spring loaded plunger as shewn to hold the trigger still. This will never get out of adjustment requires no accurate machining for itself or for the trigger which need not fit well sideways. We are still working on the prevention of movement of the whole lever and shaft sideways. HDY.{William Hardy} | ||
