links. These dampers I dealt with personally and had them refitted. The work done to cure the leak was as follows - The oil groove in the bearing of the damper arm spindle was stopped up on the inner side of the bearing approximately .250" in length to prevent the oil escaping into the groove. An air vent was also drilled to prevent pressure forcing the oil out. There was no leak of oil from the gland of the dampers or anywhere else to explain the loss of oil.

With regard to 70-XJ. These dampers would not have been changed had not the owner called at the show and during conversation mentioned that fact that he was going abroad. He was recommended to call at Cricklewood and have the poundages of the dampers increased for Continental touring. The knocks from the dampers with the increased poundage i.e. 100 lbs., were too bad to allow them to remain on the car therefore it was necessary to fit two new dampers.

With regard to 173-XJ. I endeavoured to prevent unnecessary work but had to admit that the changing of the O.S.R. damper was necessary after trying the car myself.

The owner's complaint was from the near side rear. The tester reported both, and had both of them dismantled from the car. I tried both dampers fitted up on the bench and could not feel any slack or justification for the knock in the off side damper and requested them to refit it.
