"AMAL" PETROL PUMP. Metal Piston Type. Difficulty was experienced in testing this pumpdue to the fact that when the petrol washed the oil off the piston it was prone to stick at the top of the stroke, even after running it in with oil for 4 hours. It was only possible to complete the tests by supplying oil to the piston through the inspection screw before each reading. An attempt was made to supply oil to the piston from a small gravity tank attached to the inspection screw. The inspection hole, however, communicated with the suction chamber of the pump, with the result that the filter filled up with oil. The deliveries given in the descriptive pamphlet (30 to 60 pts/hr between 150 and 2000 pump r.p.m.) were quite modest, the results obtained on the rig showing deliveries of 60 to 80 pts/hr between those speeds. Tests were taken under various conditions as follows :- As supplied. (i.e. Piston spring loaded and surplus return pipe from pump to tank). Time taken to commence pumping with system dry - 2 min 2 secs at 50 p.r.p.m. The max. press. (with the delivery through the main delivery pipe cut off) was constant at 2 lbs/sq.in. between 50 and 2000 p.r.p.m. With Return-to-tank pipe blanked off. Time takne to commence pumping with system dry - 2 min 10 secs at 50 p.r.p.m. The max. press. rose from 2 lbs/sq.in. at 50 p.r.p.m. to 3½ lbs/sq.in. at 1000 p.r.p.m. and remained constant at the latter pressure up to 2000 p.r.p.m. The Piston locked solid with the Plunger, and the return-to-tank pipe in action. Time taken to commence pumping with system dry - 2 min. at 50 p.r.p.m. The max. press. at 300 p.r.p.m. was 3½ lbs/sq.in. and at 500 p.r.p.m. was over 6 lbs/sq.in. The piston locked solid with the plunger, and the return-to-tank blanked off. Time taken to commence pumping with system dry - | ||
