The self-registering clearance for the servo adjustment, as designed, is not working satisfactorily. Modifications to this are being considered.

STEERING LOCK.
============

The question of steering lock has been gone into, and experiments are being made in the following directions to obtain the maximum lock:-

(a) Dropping the shaft on the axle.
(b) Making the vertical con. rod solid with the ball joint at one end.
(c) New steering arms.

PROTECTION OF BRAKE OPERATING JOINTS ON FRONT AXLE.
====================================================

A scheme is being sent through from West WitteringHenry Royce's home town.

TRANSMISSION OF ROAD SHOCKS TO STEERING WHEEL.
==============================================

It is thought that for the conversion cars the alteration of the angle of the steering pivots, making this the same as on the old 40/50, together with suitable springs in the side steering rod, will put this point right, the slower speed steering being left over to be embodied on new cars.

JAGGERS.
=======

With the existing brakes, on DES.60 we were just on the point of effective braking and absence of jaggers, but it is now reported that jaggers are occurring with this car. We think that this is due to the efficiency of the servo falling off, owing to oil increasing the proportion of work done by direct foot pressure. For the conversion cars, after doing the best we can on these various points, we may have to slightly reduce the effectiveness of the braking on the front axle to the point where we are free from jaggers.

The Experimental Dept. are pushing on with experiments and tests with the agreed scheme, so that we can complete our information with regard to the flat plate clutch and the effectiveness of the brakes. We ought to be able to get many of our points finally right using these cars, without waiting for the H.DES.60.
