S(c to Dr. Olley) OA SPT Mr. Hives Mr. Day Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} Wg.{Mr Gill - Financial Director} 4940 Rg{Mr Rowledge}3/WD.{Mr Wood/Mr Whitehead} 4. 24 SECRET DESIGN COMMITTEE MEETING AT DERBY. 8th & 9th. APRIL. Present Mr. Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}, Mr. Pls. Mr. A Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} SERVO. The question of the efficiency of the flat plate servo, raised in memo Rg{Mr Rowledge}1/W7.4.24, was discussed, and taking the evidence of the original slow speed flat plate servo, it was agreed that this type could be made to work satisfactorily. The question of the 100 sets of material for the original agreed scheme, as regards gear box and servo, authorised to be put in hand, was considered, and it was found to be impossible to use any of this material. Very little of this material has been produced, and it is mainly a question of patterns, jigs, and tools. It was felt that a considerable amount of the trouble with regard to the flat plate clutch made for the agreed scheme was due to the drive between the two plates being taken at a small radius. The drive is now being taken at as large a radius as possible. Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} reported with regard to the increased effect of the servo, due to alterations to leverage, over the agreed scheme, and this is being further checked by comparison with the original flat plate clutch. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} will send to West WitteringHenry Royce's home town exact details of the leveranges on the latter scheme, for comparison. We know by the evidence of the original slow speed servo that the faults complained of on the agreed scheme are being got over, and are entered for in the designs being sent through for M.DES.60. ADJUSTMENTS. The question of adjustments needed was discussed, and it was agreed that the only adjustments that could be used were:- (a) The adjustment for wear on the plates of the servo by the nut on the servo spindle. (b) The adjustment for the four brakes. The question of this latter adjustment is being gone into further, and suggestions will be sent through. West WitteringHenry Royce's home town are sending through a modification providing stops for the servo to prevent damage in the event of one of the actuating ropes breaking or stretching due to the servo seizing.
