Report comparing two design schemes for gland packing, detailing issues with scheme LeC.5060 and proposing modifications.

-2- Neither scheme gave any trouble with water leaks but the scheme LeC.5060 has a defect in that it is difficult to tighten up the gland nut E.88227 due to the fact that it binds on the top washer E.88230 which in turn adheres to the gland packing E.88231 (owing to the compression forcing the rubber into the slot in the top washer). The gland packing itself therefore has to rotate and does so only with difficulty as the compression of the rubber causes it to bind on to the thermometer bulb. Summary. The scheme which we think should be standardised as soon as practicable is similar one to Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}80 as being the simpler, cheaper and more effective one. In order to use up the existing thermometers however, the scheme LeC.5060 should be fitted to production cars, as soon as possible. The gland packings E.88231 and E.88228 should be modified in length, however to reduced the compression of the rubber by at least .080. In the meantime we propose to try this scheme using softer rubber and reducing the compression by only .040 The scheme Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}80 has been fitted to 32-MX{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} through out its mileage in France todate, without giving any trouble, while a set of parts to LeC. 5060 has been despatched to G.W.H. in France for fitting to 22-C-V.{VIENNA} Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Std. | ||
