TANK ENGINES - IGNITION SCREENING.

Major Rowcroft and Mr. Sheryer visited Derby yesterday accompanied by the undersigned to discuss the question of screening to specification RE/PROV/3086 for which the War Office has asked us to quote a price to equip the 20/25 H.P. engines already supplied and to be supplied, under existing contracts.

E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer}, Hx. and Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Wst. discussed the matter with them.

Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Wst. produced the new phosphor-bronze covered cable and sparking plug screens which we have been trying out, and it was agreed by the War Office representatives that, seeing these parts could be applied to the existing system as supplied on the first order for 50 and that the phosphor-bronze braided cable was so very much more durable than the copper covered, they were prepared to recommend that we should be asked to quote for the supply of [handwritten: plug] [crossed out: screens] and phosphor-bronze covered wire in order to improve our existing sets without it being necessary to scrap our standard parts and the rest of the screening system already accepted by the War Office as being sufficiently satisfactory. It was made clear that any deviation from the system as applied to the first 50 engines would have to be the subject of an amendment to contract.

We now await a further communication from the War Office on this subject, and in the meantime the construction of the engines will of course proceed strictly in accordance with the contract.

F.{Mr Friese}
