Dear Robotham, In reply to your letter dated July 16th, I am sending a set of detail drawings of our 1939 gearbox so that you can form your own judgment on the wideness of our limits. I agree with you that your people's method of checking tolerances of manufacture by overall backlash is not strictly a fair one, because there are one or two places where we deliberately put backlash into this gearbox. With regard to the brake. We have a design for a two-leading shoe hydraulic brake which works on an entirely different principle from the mechanical one which you saw. We have never made this brake but have got some wooden models of it, which are now with Lockheeds. If you are interested, when we get them back I will send them up to you. Sorry to hear that your motorcars will not operate continuously at high speeds! Yours sincerely, M.C. Wilks | ||
