a note being added to the drawing that the bellows must compress at least 1/8" without the convolutions becoming solid. This allows us the necessary latitude in manufacture, which is not present if the solid and free lengths are both tied up by limits.

You will appreciate that the characteristics of a bellows are primarily governed by the number of convolutions used, and that having produced a convolution of suitable shape to give the necessary movement, the solid length can only be altered by the removal or addition of one convolution or half a convolution.

It seems to us, however, that providing that the bellows will give the necessary compression and return to the correct free length, the actual dimensions of the solid length are not of great importance.

We note that the only other bellows which you are likely to need for production purposes are 1¼" outside diameter.

We are preparing a drawing showing the limits to which we should like to work.

Our standard by-pass thermostat has a 1¼" dia. connection and we are to-day sending you one in the hope that you may be able to use it. If you are unable to do so we shall be pleased to make up one specially having a 1.1/8" dia. pipe.

Our standard price for this instrument in lots of 200 is 15/-.

It occurs to us as being more than probable that you may require a special connection on the by-pass and other modifications. If you will be good enough to take this as an indication of the price we shall be very pleased to give you a further quotation when we receive your comments on the general design.

Yours truly,
THE PACKLESS GLAND CO. LTD.
