Frame and Fittings.

Produced to LOP.FW.926, incorporating the following :-

Modification to welded Frame Assembly Lec.5442, 5523/30, N.S.5046, 5011, 4971.

Revised Rear Dumb Irons in accordance with Lec.5442.

Petrol Tank Suspension and Stone Guard to Lec.5165.

High Front Engine Mounting, modification to Nose Bearing and wide Centre Torque Rubbers to Lec.5558, 5598, 5603.

Revised Steering Box Mounting N.S.4835 and various other minor modifications.

The side channels and side plate were produced in 10 SWG. (.128) material, with .064 thick cruciform, and all crossmembers bolted in position. The complete frame was produced by Rubery Owen.

The frame assembly was chalk tested and found satisfactory.

On examining the Wheelarch Support Brackets FW.378/9 and FW.1235/6, they were found to have collapsed .075 to .150 under the weight of the body, despite the fact that these pieces were produced from .104 material in lieu of .093 as specified on the detail drawing. It is suggested that these brackets be increased in thickness to .128 to accord with Phantom III practice.

The Frame Brackets FW.972 for the Front Engine Mounting are cracked on the top face between the .375 diameter and .093 diameter holes, as illustrated on the attached print Ex.I.203. It is suggested that the .093 holes be deleted and a double-ended lockplate employed to replace the two small lockplates.

The welded Rear Crossmember was examined and found satisfactory.

The high front engine mounting failed after a small mileage, and is superseded by an improved type.

continued.
