Wor{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager}/Hy{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer}1/L241113. Sheet.9. Both brakes are on the rear wheels, the foot brakes being contracting steel bands 2 1/4" wide and lined with fabric, and the hand brakes are expanding brass rings similar to those used by us, on the first two cylinder cars we made, they are expanded by a cam. The brake drums are about 13 3/4" dia., the brakes are not good and the design is very very poor. They are compensated by means of pressed steel balanced bars across the frame and sliding in slots in the frame. The propeller shaft is tubular and is 1 3/4" outside diameter. It was found to be badly bent and twisted when examined and does not seem good enough for the job. The universal joints at each end are the same as each other, being ordinary sliding pin and block joints, but round bushes are used instead of square blocks as is usual.
