REPORT ON REAR WHEEL FOOT BRAKES. Since writing the report Wor{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager}/Hyl6/L20814 we have removed the brake drums from the car on which the tests were carried out and find that the Ferodo liners on the near side brake are worn almost through in the centres of the shoes. The off side brake however shows practically no wear and is in a most excellent condition. The brake drum has. a beautifully polished surface. This examination has proved our suspicions that the near side-brake was doing practically all the work. I am still of the opinion that this is due in some way to the fact that we are using the brakes against the engine power and not in simply retarding the car. I cannot explain why the fact of using the brakes against the engine power should load the near side brake more than the off side. We are fitting new liners to replace the worn ones and propose to test severely on the road but not against the engine power. We are pushing on with the 2" wide brake straps as these will give us about 30% more bearing surface for the Ferodo. | ||
