GOSHAWK 11. BENDIX PINION.

We understand that the Bendix Pinion jams between the thread and the collar in the off position and that we are sure that the thread is clear away so that no jamming is taking place there.
We understand that the Marmon pinion flies back on to the end of the threads and that the male thread is screw milled but that the finish of the thread grooves is so sudden that no jamming occurs. We have a sample here at W.W. of a pinion in which the ends of the threads have been slotted to a round shape apparently with a view to acting as stops. This does not seem a desirable way of getting over the trouble particularly for our pinion which centres itself on the smaller diameter of the thread, also the policy of fitting 3 pins in the male for the female threads to come back on does not seem satisfactory owing to the difficulty of making a good job of the pins. We suggest that the bendix be tried with a slightly quicker driving thread. We have schemed such a thread on drawing No. LeC 1537 which is attached to Mr. Bailey's copy of this memo. We have made the angle of this thread distinctly outside of the angle of repose of dry metal on dry metal. The disadvantage of this way of overcoming the trouble is that the pinion may fail to move endways when the starter motor operates so we thought it advisable to have an alternative method which you can try as well which was suggested by Mr. Royce before he left for Le CanadelHenry Royce's French residence, and consists of allowing the pinion to strike against the normal surfaces when it
