We send you herewith N. scheme 3416 shewing the vacuum operation of the control for the dampers as proposed by R.{Sir Henry Royce} A sketch of this scheme shewing all the essential features was sent to R.{Sir Henry Royce} some time ago, but has no yet been commented upon. His latest letter however does not rule it out, and it is considered that it should be sent to Derby so that at any rate one method of operating the dampers is available for experiment. We have succeeded in embodying all the points asked for by E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer}, namely: (a) Increased dia. of the springs except one which is guided by its fitting. (b) Positive control in both directions for the piston valve shutting off the relief valve. (c) Avoiding the outside pipe. (d) The cylinder made separate from the main casting. It is suggested that it might be castiron. We have also improved the stop for the vacuum valve. It is suggested that it may be unnecessary to provide the replenishment scheme in this particular instance, as the whole scheme may ultimately be altered, and the replenishment is a refinement that perhaps could be dispensed with on the first car.
