RR. 864. ROLLS-ROYCE, LIMITED. LL 181 LABORATORY REPORT ON SAMPLE OF STEEL. To E.P. Hives Date 21/6/18 Re Articulated Rod broken on test in the form of steel marked E10372 received at works on received by laboratory on 20/6/18 CHEMICAL ANALYSIS. Carbon ..................... .35 % Nickel ..................... 3.63 % Chromium ................... % Vanadium ................... % Tungsten ................... % Manganese ................ .54 % Silicon .................. .070 % Sulphur .................. .022 % Phosphorus ............... .032 % Handwritten text over analysis section: The trouble seems to have started from the pin; the outside of the fact that this heavily stressed part should not be so near, there is no reduction of section. JCW Handwritten text on right side: whole note should be pressed in. Remarks, etc. Brinell figure = 311 The composition is normal, though the manganese + silicon are somewhat on the low side indicating that the steel may not have been quite as sound as usual. The micro structure was satisfactory but there was evidence of intense fibrosity & from examination of fracture, etc, we think this has had some influence. Signature [illegible] | ||
