Four of these were reported in Quarterly Report and is peculiar to the Phantom II chassis. It is due to the heat from the exhaust pipe. It was first found on test in Nov. 1929 by having to run on the road with the shutters closed and the heat from the exhaust did not get so readily displaced and the portion of the H.T. tube moulding E.78098 got blistered badly and damaged locally. We were able to make these O.K. again by removing the ebonite for a distance of 5.3" and having the bared portion black enamelled. The D.O. got out the Alteration No. 14099/E for this job. This was done on all chassis leaving the Works from about the second week in December 1929. A number of chassis would have been despatched without this modification. Since the above alteration we have been free of trouble with this part on test and on the dynamometer we use baffles to protect the tube and wires. The Paris Dept. have fitted several heat deflecting shields for the protection of the tube and wires. I am not sure that this is a cure, but it must be of great service in this way. The Experimental Dept. are also running one on one of their cars, so it may be found necessary to make the shield a standard job. M.Wyer. | ||
