- 7 - Gear change mechanism. (continued) - Happens to get in contact with lever. Servo & servo gears. These have operated quite satisfactory, we have had no signs of servo jagger. The condition of servo and link motion is good. Pedals. The pedals appear to be quite good and no wear is noticanle in bearings. Starter motor. X. 5620. This has been very erratic in action. Upon pressing the switch button the motor has revolved without engaging; at other times the gears have chattered on the edge of tooth of fly wheel; we dismantled the starter motor to find the cause of the trouble. Our investigations have led us to believe that the cause is due to the nut being toofree a fit on the thread and upon being flung back upon engine starting the action of the stop plate lifts the barrel or nut upwards and causes it to bind on the thread. Also this unit containing the cork friction washer does not face true when screwed back to the friction stop. This tends to throw the nut cross wise and bind. In this condition it will not free itself when revolved. We have tried this while motor was dismantled. If we did not allow the nut to come right back to the stop, it operated every time. We are of opinion that a new nut and worm is required with less clearance. Rear axle. The rear axle is in good condition. It is difficult to observe whether it is quite owing to the tyre noise. When the car was taken over, there was a bad leak of oil from the N.S. which drained out and was flung upon the tyre, this did not get on to the brakes. We believe that this might have been caused by there being too much oil in the axle; as a quantity of oil came out when bottom plug was removed. After the oil level had been checked the leak has gradually stopped and our last examination showed very little leak of oil. The N.S. bracket holding pull off spring for foot brake had become bent over probably due to a stone being flung against it. Rear brakes, mechanism & drums. The rear brakes have during the run squeaked rather badly, this came very noticable when rear brakes had to do all the braking due to the oil getting on the front brakes. The squeaking has gradually toned down and is now heard occasionally. The condition of the brakes and drums is very good. A slight amount of dirt has passed the dust covers and is caked on the inside of covers; it has not got on the the braken. It has not been necessary at this mileage to ajust the brakes. | ||
