Mr. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} W. Hives,
Rolls Royce Limited,
Derby, England.

My dear Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}:

Thank you very much for your notes on bearing alloys, Schneider Cup, etc.

With regard to the boat race I was only upset because it was almost impossible for me to do anything for the R.R. boys in the time available. Next time I hope we shall be able to arrange things better. All they saw of the States was a lot of hard work.

On the subject of crankshaft balancing I think we can probably do best with this when Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} arrives.

One thing interests me very much -- your note on three standards of suspension and damping. Do you provide more or less damping with the softer suspensions?

Delco's experience, my own experience, and Lancia and R.R. practice suggests that --

(a) Optimum results are obtained with less damping as the suspension is softened,

(b) and with less orifice as the suspension is lubricated.

Others do not agree and I see that Omnia-Salon for October in commenting on Mercedes-Benz says they use powerful damping because of the soft suspension.

Sincerely yours,

Maurice Olley
