1305 c. Les c. Roy {Sir Henry Royce} /Mr.Whitfield. Experimental Dept. Rm {William Robotham - Chief Engineer} /AFM. {Anthony F. Martindale} 7/MH. {M. Huckerby} 29th. June, 1939. Messrs. Toledo Woodhead Springs Ltd., Toledo Spring Works, SHEFFIELD, 1. For the attention of Mr. Frank Woodhead. Dear Sirs, We have decided to fit some of your springs to a number of customers' cars. In doing this we are taking two risks:- (1) The interleaving may fail. (2) The eyes of the springs may fail. As regards (1) the interleaving is to be supplied by you, and is to be as previously agreed, i.e. 3 Spaldite and 2 Toledo Woodhead leaves. As regards (2) we have had a large number of eye failures on our rig, so much so that we have had difficulty in testing the rest of the spring. It is absolutely imperative that you now install the necessary tools for making the eyes. This will, we trust, remove the risk of failure, but if such failures occur it will prove the springs to be defective and we will have to discontinue ordering them. The production cars to which they are to be fitted are some special Bentleys which we can watch carefully. We want one dozen pairs of 5 1/4" deflection springs similar to those ordered on January 5th., our order number 80199. Initial camber +4 1/2, loaded camber -1/2", loaded length 50-1/16", poundage 1,000. We want these urgently and would like to talk to you about the job. Perhaps the best thing is for Mr. Martindale to go to Sheffield one afternoon, say Monday next, July 3rd. Of course, we know that a dozen pairs of springs can hardly be classed as an order, but actually these springs are wanted for experiment to show cars. | ||
