| To Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} & Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} Copy to Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} EH. MX.{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} Present Phantom III Position. 1. Vapour Lock. We are incorporating a hand operated valve in the filter outside the frame, but this scheme altogether is not suitable for certain types of coachwork, and the filter gauzes are not accessible. An improved scheme with the filter rearranged on the rear cross member sufficiently high up to avoid the necessity for a cock has been issued to LeC 4721/7.10.35, and should be tried out as soon as possible. Awaiting tests of thermostatically operated shutters to LeC 4698/12.9.35. 2. Erratic Slow Running. The car at present running in France is fitted with slow running stops on each throttle which should provide easier adjustment and more constant slow running. With regard to the downdraught carburetter the scheme with the four port head which is the final design is arranged with thermostat controlled exhaust heating. We believe this will improve slow running and carburetter operation generally. 3. Piston Knocks and Overoiling. There is every indication that the die cast fully split piston will overcome this trouble, in conjunction with increased oil drainage from the cylinder head. Sand cast fully split pistons were free from knocks for some little time, but like all previous sand cast pistons gave trouble after some little use. The smoking caused by top overoiling should be cured by the design modifications instructed to improve the drainage of the cylinder heads to LeC 4711/30.9.35. For heads in service a drain pipe scheme was issued to LeC 4724/25.9.35., and this is fitted to later trials cars. 4. Broken Push Rod. Stronger push rods instructed to LeC 4624/5.8.35. | ||
