Dear Mr. Longley, While you were away I wrote you about brake squeaks. Mr. Shilton answered the letter and sent off some Ferodo S.5805 as a cure. Of course we have tried this and have quite a lot in stock, so I awaited your return before replying, as Mr. Shilton is evidently unfamiliar with our position. As regards Ferodo S.5805, our experiences with it may interest you. (1) We ran this material 15,000 miles on a Standard Bentley 4¼. We had complaints of brake squeaks during this mileage. (2) We have a rig over here, which is lined with Ferodo S.5805. It produces the most piercing squeaks whenever we want. (3) We have run Ferodo S.5805 15,000 miles against Aluminium drums with Millenite liners ( H.F. Millenite, Brinell 230 - 260, is our Standard brake drum material). During this mileage the brakes gave excellent results, i.e. they effectively stopped the car, did not fade and did not squeak. They wore out very quickly, and upon examination of the drums after the run we found they were very badly scored. As this is the one vice I did not expect of S.5805, I am returning the linings to you. You will see on them the imprint of the damage they have done to our drums.
