Please quote our reference: S.1. SALES DIRECTOR'S OFFICE. 8th October 1935. Messrs.Rolls Royce Ld, DERBY. Attention of Mr.Robotham. file Dear Sirs, JACKALL SYSTEM FITTED TO CHASSIS 21-G-IV. I beg to acknowledge receipt of yours dated the 4th October, Ref: Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}19/KW. It so happens that your letter reached me at the same time as our Engineers' report following a most careful investigation of the jacks and parts which were brought back by our Fitting Manager, Mr.Bailey, after his visit to your Works. In view of your experience I am not at all surprised at the sentiments expressed in your letter and, frankly, when I first interviewed Mr.Bailey upon his return from Derby I was very concerned as never in the history of Jackall have we received such an unsatisfactory report. The matter, however, is thoroughly explained after dismantling the four jacks and the control box as all the rubber parts are so very badly swollen and distorted due to the use of a mineral oil - which would account for the failure of the various components to function in their respective capacity. I would observe that the jack rubber bucket washers are not so badly distorted as the actual rubber distributor valve, in fact, one of the jack washers appears to be normal and, on test, this particular jack showed no signs of leakage.
