ENGINE Timing Gears rattle. Cam Balancer not a complete cure. Later complaints are on cars fitted with cam balancer. This feature urgently requires improvement. No complaints on Phantom III. Poor Idling of Engines. Numerous complaints on 25/30HP. Some improvement obtained by altering characteristic of ignition advance and increasing tappet clearance as Depot Sheet No.350. Valve Springs broken or weak. A few in 1935 only on 20/25Hp. Two cases on PH.III total of 6 springs broken. Oil leaks. Rear main bearings ) 25/30HP. Rocker cover joints. ) Engine overoiling. Improved by fitting 'L' Section rings on 25/30HP and closer fitting valve guides PH.III Stromberg Carburetter. Flooding and leaking. Flat spot and starvation. Choke valve spindle sticking. (Should be positively operated for cold starting) Petrol Consumption. Very few complaints on latest cars. Sticking throttles. Several on all cars. To cure, spindles cleaned and eased. Popping in silencer. 25/30HP. S.U. Petrol Pumps. Failures & complaints of noise. Ignition failures. Several 20/25HP. A few 25/30HP failures are due to, as follows:- Several coils - a quantity of condenser and H.T. wires - faulty rotors, C.B. points, switch boxes and distributor heads. Dynamo. Noisy ball races, not improved with roller bearing, a few fail to charge due to faulty commutation. contd- | ||
