A.{Mr Adams} Robotham Rolls-Royce Limited Derby, England Dear Mr. Robotham; In reply to your letter of the 13th ult., we are pleased to have your comments regarding the 1/2" pitch chain, as you received them from the Graham-Paige engineers. In this connection we desire to assure you that we are quite neutral in regards to the 1/2" pitch versus the 3/8" pitch chains. Our customers are using both and we feel sure that equally good results are being obtained. We have, of course, the Lincoln 12 cylinder car and the Cadillac 12 and 16 cylinder cars, in which the 3/8" pitch duplex chains are used in connection with the automatic adjustment idler sprocket. In both of these cases the chain is what we consider normally a long chain. As very slight wear takes place in the joints the overall wear becomes a factor, and is compensated for by means of the adjustment. We favor the automatic adjustment in these cars because no attention is required for at least fifty percent of the usable life of the car, and therefore often passes to the second and third owner before replacement of the chain is necessary.
