- 21 - HPS{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr}/RH.{R. Hollingworth}1/VS.{J. Vickers}23.9.37. Rear Shock Dampers (Continued). The loads had decreased 30 lbs, but in this connection it should be noted that the original loading of 60 lbs included 25 lbs gland friction. It was also observed that the Main Bearings were badly worn; this is interesting, since there was no report of "knocking" occurring during the tests; therefore, the effect of the rubber gland on this problem is worth further consideration. The Off Side Oil Level was almost down to the lowest working level, and the load had decreased to 40 lbs. Except for the gland (previously mentioned) the only other defect of importance was slight "flaking" of the wearing pads, the condition of the Valves, Piston and Cylinder being good. Governor Control to Damper LOP.F.87072. Condition good. F.86761 Shaft had moved .011 in the Hoffmann Bearing, probably caused when assembling to the Gearbox; this would have the effect of increasing the minimum pressure. All the Valves were in good condition and free from foreign matter; the Filter, which is fitted to Phantom III only, is serving a useful purpose. Steering Column LOP.F.89162. Lec.5601. RM.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}352. Pendulumn Lever F.89126 had been damaged by rough usage on dismantling. Mr. Gallimore is designing a tool for Production which should be circulated to Service Stations; also, Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} has been asked to modify the bottom end of the Lever to permit the use of an extractor to remove the Ball End Pin. The Roller Follower and Races were returned after 12850 miles. Roller Follower F.89010 was worn and indented on one track and slightly worn on the other. Inner Races showed signs of a flaw and were indented. continued. | ||
