Alterations to the 'SS' crankshaft rear oil retainer to improve efficiency and prevent leaks.

Smith}' CRANKSHAFT REAR OIL RETAINER. X.7010 X.7000 The leak at the above point reported on the 10,000 miles test has not been experienced at Derby. Nevertheless we think a slight alteration to the oil retainer should be made, which we think should greatly reduce improve its efficiency. The rear cover on the SS.{S. Smith} is split 1" below the crankshaft centre to match the crankcase, as in fig.1. SEE ORIGINAL FOR SKETCH. The section through the crankshaft oil flinger is as in fig.2. The shaft is made sufficiently clear on the bore of the cover to drop through the upper portion as in fig.3. when removing shaft from top half of crankcase. The present Phantom has crankcase split on crank centre line and is arranged as in fig.4. (on sheet 2.) It will be xxx seen that here there are two oil retainers in series with an oil drain between. Sketch We now propose to make SS.{S. Smith} with a double flinger and oil drain between, as on blueprint Lec.2636 herewith. The crankcase joint remaining as before, and the bottom half can be dropped without risk of damage as it is very quickly clear of the oil flinger. We had looked into the question of adapting to SS.{S. Smith} a retainer of the present Phantom type - fig.4. but this necessitates stepping the joint between upper and lower halves of crankchamber, either by overlapping the rear cover or making it as shewn on blueprint Lec.2632 herewith, neither of which we consider satisfactory.
