Coverley - Production Engineer}/JMN. 12.02 Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}2/R.30.4.38. STABILISED DIE CASTINGS FOR WRAITH. ? Replying to RHC{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer}/JMW8/HM.{Capt. W. Hallam - Head Repairs}25.4.38., the position regarding the dies released - three numbers of which do not agree with your latest Tool Lists - is as follows:- (a) Clutch Casing. The clutch casing GW.1944 cannot be replaced by GW2044 until 15,000 miles in France has been successfully completed on the latter. This means that GW.2044 is unlikely to be released until next Christmas. Since you are already asking for release for a further 200 Wraiths, which makes a total of 300 in all, these 300 will have to be to GW.1944. If it is a fact that the die cost will be recovered in 150 castings, then the die for GW.1944 should be made to enable the first 300 to be produced, at minimum cost. Our present recommendation is that GW.2044 should be held up until the introduction of B.III, and B.III and Wraith brought in line at this point. (b) Jack Supports. It is correct that two dimensions have been altered on the jack supports, and that they have been given a new number - GW.2047/8 - in consequence. These jack supports will be standardised, and, therefore, the die which you have in course of construction will be used. With regard to the general procedure for releasing dies, we are taking the matter up with the D.O. and Tool Dept. to make sure that, in future, no discrepancies occur, and will arrange that the tools released are forthwith brought into line with our Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}9/R.12.4.38.
