HPS{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr} from Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/AFM{Anthony F. Martindale} Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/AFM{Anthony F. Martindale}1/M.13.2.37. Bentley Aluminium Front Drums. Contraction Crackles. We want to build up three more front drums of various types to test them for contraction crackles. The drums must not necessarily have hubs on them but they should be finished machined on the inside rubbing face. This means that if there is a shortage of hubs they will each have to be built on a single hub in turn prior to final machining. The drums need not have lock plates fitted but they must have their liners milled to receive them. The three drums should be as follows:- (1) Drum with its liner made in two separate rings as shown on Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} 324. The rings to be millenite rings each dropped in separately. Obviously only the inner ring could be keyed in position. Interference to be standard. (2) Drum with millenite liner heavily copper plated. Plating to be .004" + 4 thick. A small ring will be needed as the copper will increase its outside diameter. Interference to be standard. (3) A Brimol ring with .008" to .012" interference.
