(2) It follows also that if the ends of the liners are worn away the brake will appear extra spongy. We think you could prove whether there is anything in this by cutting out about 60º of the middle of the shoe, but preferably do this experiment with the locomotive type of shoe. We are endeavouring to make a satisfactory design in which the liner will in effect consist of 4 pieces of 45º circumferentially, and 4 spaces of 45º. The lever type of brake permits of this. It also should give the effect of the bedding provided by Mr. Hancock's spring loaded tip, the action of which may be explained in the above paragraph. Regarding the modification of the spring loaded tip in the form of a supplementary locomotive type swivelling shoe, I quite approve of this as a temporary measure, it being quite a passable scheme, and not having the disadvantages of the first scheme.
