re Mr.R.P. Richard's chassis - No.1560

The matter has been put before Mr.Royce who comments as follows:-

This gentleman would not complain without a reason. It is not the mere fact of the slack in the holes of the spring bushes, but some defect in working.

I can only think that what is wrong may be the following:-

The links are rather long. They are separate links, and owing to original or worm slackness they allow the rear end of the spring to move sideways.

If this is the fault, we can cure it by looking to the following points:-

(1) The holes in the links and in the frame should not be slack.

(2) The two links should be held together by web or bar. In accordance with present practice.

(3) Failing (2) the links should have long bosses tight or conical on the pins with a nut at each end, or its equivalent. See sketch sent to Mr. Spinney.

Arrange good lubrication.

The slack is not put in these spring bushes through economy or bad workmanship. Compared with locos, all chassis are more flexible and have to run on road surfaces having twenty times the unevenness of steel railways, and we found
