Dear Sirs,

I expressed the opinion when I saw you that I was a little doubtful whether an examination of the deposit would throw any direct light on the sludge formation in the gear box. I was inclined to the opinion that a temperature above 110°C must have been experienced, but you felt that was very unlikely. Our examination of the deposit from the Castrol Hi-Press gives the following results:-

Organic matter sol. in benzene 1.4
